Highlights from the Emmy Awards 2021
On September 20th, 2021, we celebrated yet another Emmy Awards 2021 and this year, the 73rd annual awards, it was a much anticipated “will-we, won’t-we” be able to celebrate type of awards due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. However, the awards were permitted to take place and do it in style they did! In front of a vaccinated audience, the show went ahead, much as the saying “The show must go one.” It was a departure from 2019 Emmy Awards but far better than the online awards of 2021, thankfully. In fact, it (almost) felt like normal. There was little social distancing, hardly any mask-wearing and people felt free, unabandoned – uninhibited! It was a party – whether or not it was safe is another matter but certainly, no major catastrophes came from the Emmy Awards 2021.
The Dominance of Ted Lasso, TV Show
So, onto the shows that dominated the Emmy Awards 2021 and the first hour was pretty much dedicated to a trio of excellent TV shows from the year, namely Ted Lasso, The Crown and Mare of Easttown. In fact, Ted Lasso managed to gain four nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. Brett Goldstein, also a Ted Lasso actor won another award. This wasn’t the end for the show’s accolades. It won a Lead-Actor Honor for its mascot, Sudeikis and the award for Outstanding Comedy Series. From a nobody coming from nowhere – that’s a real achievement. Other shows that won were Hacks (which took home several awards – including one for Jean Smart).
The Crown Reaped Many Awards
The Crown (drama about the British royal family) won an award for its writing, directing and Josh O Connor won an award for playing Prince Charles. Additionally Tobias Menzies won an award for his portrayal of Prince Philip and Gillian Anderson for her Margaret Thatcher. Olivia Colman won an award for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth 2nd and Emma Corrin won an award – not for best actress but for boldest outfit. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 none of the actors or actresses (or indeed any of the crew or cast of The Crown) were present but they were beamed live from somewhere in London for their happy acceptances! The show also won the Award for Outstanding Drama series – very fitting indeed.
Other Distinguished Emmy Awards 2021
The Award for Outstanding Lifetime Achievement went to Debbie Allen and another notable nomination was MJ Rodriguez, the first in her category for a transgender actor for Lead Actress in a Drama. Michaela Coel won an award for writing for I May Destroy You. Scott Frank won an award for directing The Queen’s Gambit which won another award for Outstanding Limited Series (just a step ahead of nominee Mare of Easttown. Netflix did extraordinarily well in the Emmy Awards 2021.
